🖤💛❤️💚 Mary Eliza Mahoney became the first Black woman to earn a professional nursing license in 1879. Because of rampant racism and discrimination, Mahoney pursued her career in private settings and tended to individual patients. In 1908, Mahoney co-founded the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses (NACGN) because the Nurses Associated Alumnae of the United States and Canada (NAAUSC)—later the American Nurses Association (ANA)—was not welcoming to Black nurses. After the 19th Amendment was passed in 1920, Mahoney was one of the first women to register to vote in Boston. 💚❤️💛🖤
“Work more and better the coming year than the previous year.“

🖤💛💚❤️ Alain Leroy Locke was the first Black Rhodes Scholar and received his Ph.D. from Harvard. He was a leader and teacher at Howard University for nearly 40 years. Locke worked tirelessly to promote Black culture through the arts and tracing the connections to African sources. He is remembered as the leader and chief interpreter of the Harlem Renaissance. As a humanist, Locke valued the respect we must have for the uniqueness of each other. ❤️💚💛🖤
“Art must discover and reveal the beauty which prejudice and caricature have overlaid.”

Harvard with a Ph.D. He was a strong advocate for teaching not only African American history, but the teaching of Black achievements and heritage to ALL Americans. He was one of the first to champion for Black History Month and is considered the Father of Black History. 💚❤️💛🖤

Thursday morning RAS hosted a FAFSA workshop for our seniors and their parents. The Illinois Student Assistance Commission joined us to help facilitate the workshop and answer any questions our families had about the process of applying for student aid.

It is always nice to be back in the building after two days of professional development at the Illinois Principal's Association Fall Conference. I had a great opportunity to learn, discuss current challenges, network and enhance my overall skills.

The Illinois Retired Teachers Association Foundation stopped by RAS today and delivered a check to Mrs. Quick. She was one of their grant recipients and now has $750 to expand cooking opportunities for students at RAS! Thank you, IRTAF, for your support!

Mr. Kendall and Mr. Folkens were able to visit Rivian for their First Mile R1T Preview. It was a great opportunity to experience their new vehicle and bring back what they learned about a local manufacturer. They are looking forward to sharing what they learned with the students at RAS!

RAS Staff had a great morning session of service and reflection. We worked to clean up litter from Underwood Park, followed by team engagement in reflecting on the first five weeks of school and planning for the next few months. #BeTheChange
